Each year, Tar River Reading Council (TRRC) works within the community to promote literacy. A few years ago, we began our community outreach with a new idea "Lobby Library" and formed a partnership with ECU Pediatric Specialty Clinic here in Greenville. Through funding within our own local organization and grants from the North Carolina Reading Association, we were able to help create several Lobby Libraries within the medical district of Greenville. The libraries are placed in the lobbies at pediatric doctor's offices/clinics to provide books for children to read while waiting for appointments and/or take home. Many of the offices we targeted serve low-income families with limited literacy resources. We are continuing these efforts while partnering with a local organization, READ ENC.
For several years, TRRC has also participated in ECU’s Earth Day Expo in April. During this time, TRRC members and volunteers read “earth day” books to children, offer Earth Day resources including book lists, and share information about our council with parents. This is a fun event and wonderful way to put high quality literature in the hands of children.
