Each year, Tar River Reading Council (TRRC) works within the community to promote literacy and partners with NCRA for project funding.
We first began our community outreach with a "Lobby Library" and formed a partnership with the ECU Pediatric Specialty Clinic in Greenville. We were later able to expand this project and created several Lobby Libraries within the medical district of Greenville. The libraries are placed in the lobbies at pediatric doctor's offices/clinics to provide books for children to read while waiting for appointments and/or take home. Many of the offices we targeted serve low-income families with limited literacy resources. We are continuing these efforts while partnering with a local organization, READ ENC.
For several years, TRRC has also participated in ECU’s Earth Day Expo in April. During this time, TRRC members and volunteers read “earth day” books to children, offer Earth Day resources including book lists, and share information about our council with parents. This is a fun event and wonderful way to put high quality literature in the hands of children.
TRRC will be starting a new project in 2022--Creating Story Walks in public parks/trails in Pitt and Beaufort Counties.
